For those design lovers and DIYers that like to do this process on their own follow our 5 step guide to think about it before buying your window treatments.
Drapes, Blinds Or Shutters
The homes architectural style, existing interior scheme and window shape, along with your priorities in terms of light and privacy, will determine the best solution for you. Perhaps more than one may be needed in some areas with a lot of direct sunlight, a couple of extra blinds now may save you from having to replace furniture or carpet in years to come, just remember to close them when you’re not there.
Properties with large windows and breathtaking views obviously want to make the most of their scenery but this of course leaves you a little more exposure to the sun and neighbours. we recommend a double-track blind, one with a sun-screen letting you still see-through and let the light in and then on block out blind to give you total privacy and darkness when needed. Alternatively, if you wanted to add a little more softness and texture to the space, consider a drape and blind combination. Giving you the best of both worlds, protection from the sun and another layer of design.
Affordability
Having a budget in mind from the get-go will ensure you receive the very best solutions and fabrics you can afford- But remember to be realistic. Nowadays there is an endless supply of different fabrics so having a budget will automatically narrow down your search.
A common mistake for those building a new home is to overlook the window treatments until the house is nearly complete and therefore there is minimal budget left. Ideally, this should be included in the build cost from the beginning as window treatments are a really good investment.
Keep in mind if you choose the right thing it will protect your other essentials like flooring and furniture from sun damage/fading. Also adding texture, interest and life to your windows. Whether you want to make a statement or just have them blend in, a good window treatment can really make a space.
Function
The primary purpose of each space will guide your decisions. Different rooms will require different treatments or a combination of various types. If you have a really sunny room and need total darkness to help with sleeping or to watch tv ensure you get blackout fabric or blackout blind. Keep in mind that depending on where your window treatment is placed and the type you get, light may shine into the room either from above, below or from the sides. So if it is a blind put it inside the window and have it snug to the corners. We recommend taking drapes right to the ceiling and the ground in a pencil pleat if you want total blackout. If you want a window treatment purely for looks and little privacy. Maybe a sheer is the way for you. A gorgeous, floaty sheer can really add a touch of luxury to any space. Keep in mind if you’re thinking about this option that although many fabrics are “resistant” to sun damage they will get fading of some sort over a long duration of time being in the heat.
Colour, Texture and Pattern
Choose a colour that either compliment the walls or is in complete contrast, and if you want to introduce pattern and texture, make sure your selection works well with existing design details. Pick out a feature colour you have in the room and go for it. Make a statement.
For those who are wanting to sell your property in the near future take that into consideration when choosing your window treatments. Go for something neutral that will appeal to 90% of your prospective buyers.
Placement
Consider whether window treatments will be installed inside or outside the frame, just above the frame or right to the ceiling. in some circumstances there may not be a choice, but its always good to know your opinions,
If your budget allows it we always suggest taking your drapes right to the ground for a nicer look.
